Sailing Equipment: Sail Boats, Sails And Hardware

Few human activities and passions have sought to defy or flaunt humankind's ability to over come and harness the immeasurable power of Mother Nature like sailing. As sailing has evolved alongside the endeavoring spirit behind man's expansion and progression, its basic principles have been retained, but aggrandized with innovations, technologies, and methods.
At the heart of every sailor is a legacy that traces back to the earliest civilizations that took to the seas as a means of survival. Although the hearts and minds and the craft have changed little in principle, the defining difference between sailors of the past and sailors of today are the different types of sailing equipment. Although purists may challenge the influence of technology based sailing equipment, one must wonder if it had been available at the time would yesterday's sailors have taken advantage of today's modern, at least improved sailing equipment.
Perhaps the greatest achievements of today's sailing equipment is observed in the advanced communication and navigation sailing equipment available to maritime sojourners. Standards of modern sailing equipment like VHF radio (Very High Frequency) and SSB (Single Sideband), another form of radio communication, has made way for even more advanced sailing equipment like cellular phones and computer based communications.
As important as communications and navigation sailing equipment is to today's sailors, staples of sailing boat equipment as simple as the sailing knife are still considered important tools and never too far from reach. Although the days of the spyglass have passed, binoculars are still regarded as a practical piece of sailing equipment. In addition to their practical uses, as important as minding hazards on the water such as other watercraft, binoculars also double for more leisurely activities like sightseeing while on the water.
Emergency sailing equipment is also important to consider before taking to the seas. While most wave riders recognize the importance of life-jackets, it is even more important to have the presence of mind to don one's life-jacket before setting sail. A simple modification to a life-jacket can make a valuable piece of emergency equipment invaluable. Simply adding a waterproof strobe light to a sailing equipment duffel that can be securely bound to the jacket, can make a "man overboard" easier to find, especially at night.
Considering the many variables a sailor can encounter while on the water, preparing for any exigent circumstances is paramount. A short or long trip can turn quickly to a perilous journey with the failing of even the most minor component of sail boat hardware. It is impossible to prepare for every unexpected event and impractical to stow a boat full of replacement parts . However, including a rudimentary tool kit with one's sailing equipment can be all the difference in the event of failing sail boat hardware.
Although sail boat equipment and sailboat hardware have changed dramatically over time, the basic principle of sailing and having the right sailing equipment still holds true with all sailors. Sail boat equipment either for communications and navigation, safety or in preparation for an unexpected emergency are as critical for a successful trip as the sail boat itself. As a means of transportation, survival, exploration, or recreation, the right sailing equipment can make all the difference between a memorable trip or a regrettable experience.
